As online instructors, it is Best Practice to never assume your students understand what you have come to accept as common knowledge. Even though we are in the age where few people are without computers, many people are not savvy regarding the internet. Here are some tips for instructors.

It is best to give your students information in your weekly announcements that are not overwhelming but that gets them comfortable with this environment.

Try to look at this online learning environment as one that requires you as the instructor to be a cultural informant. Assume that your students are all new to this culture and your task is to keep them from experiencing “culture shock” as much as that may be possible.

One path towards achieving this goal is to use every opportunity to drop little “pearls” in your weekly announcements.
