Internet Terminology

Asynchronous: Termed which refers to events happening at different spans of time. In the online classrooms, students post to the course at different times as opposed to insta-messaging where you are responding to someone and they are responding to you synchronistically, or at the same time.

Discussion Board: The place designated for students to respond to the instructor and each other online.

Emoticons: Example: happy face (-: using the keyboard on your computer. There are many examples of good and bad emoticons.

Abbreviations: Not all abbreviations are commonly known, but here are a few of the more widely accepted and commonly used:

  • Lol lots of laughter
  • Brb be right back
  • BTW by the way
  • J/J just joking
  • TIA thanks in advance
  • <g> grin
